Summer reading questions

Brenden Hutton
Black and White: Paul Volponi
Two friends get caught in a bad situation and their friendship grows apart

There where two main characters in my book Marcus and Eddie. Marcus is a black very athletic and agile person. Eddie is white and is kind of self centered but is also athletic and agile.
In the beginning of the book we get to know the characters and the book foreshadows what the problem will be. Next, we introduce the problem where the boys get caught in a crime and Marcus takes the fall. Finally, Marcus confesses and the boys go back to being best friends.
The author is trying to say that in life you are going to make mistakes and you will have to take the consequences but you just have to keep moving forward. Also do the right thing and think about your actions and the impact they will have in the future.
Marcus has to go to jail and he will probably have to forfeit his scholarship. Eddie will also probably have to forfeit his scholarship and go to jail. Marcus’s mother will have to deal with her son being in prison and that she won’t be able to actually be with him for a long time.
Eddie didn’t want to have to go to jail and forfeit his scholarship so he didn’t want Marcus to snitch on him. Marcus got kicked off the basketball team and he let the team down because they weren’t as good without him. The author made the big issue immediate and personal by making it impact one character but most of them. The big issue also made two great friends grow apart which happens a lot in life.

I will be researching racism in the judicial court system.
7 search terms related to my topic are, minorities, racism, court, racism in the court, jails, racism cases, and teens in the judicial court system.
3 details I found out from my article are: Perhaps the most prominent and notable form of American racism (other than imperialism against Native Americans) began with the institution of slavery, From 1981 to 1997, the United States Department of Agriculture discriminated against tens of thousands of African American farmers, denying loans provided to white farmers in similar circumstances,

I found this information and picture   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racism

I believe that racism is bad and we should treat everyone equal. I think that my article contained a lot of useful information. I agree with it came off supporting a non racist image.

Dear Marcus,

I enjoyed reading about your experiences through the good and bad times with Eddie. My name is Benden and I go to John Carroll and like basketball. I live in Whitehall Maryland. I know your past few months have been very eventful and so have mine. I went on vacation three times. I went to Ocean City Maryland, Deep Creek Lake, and Myrtle Beach. I also went white water rafting.

I thought your experiences were unfortunate but u handled them well. I wouldn’t have been able to handle them as well as u did. Eddie was very self centered but you were still a good friend to him. I would have taken him to jail with me but you stayed cool and took the blame and let him off the hook. I admire you for that.

I thought the writing style that was used in your novel was very suspenseful. Also it was very realistic I felt like I was kind of a third leg to you and Eddie as you went through the book.

Every page made me want to read on to see what was on the next. The events and characters all felt real to me.

I have some questions for you that I was wondering the entire book. Why didn’t you turn in Eddie? Why didn’t you just confess what happened right away and get less jail time? When you had to leave the game and go to jail why didn’t you call for Eddie? Why didn’t you want him to come and save you? How did you feel being in jail? Were you scared?

Reading the novel makes me think of the criminal justice system as a bad place. I know that in your time and today there is sometimes racial discriminates in the criminal justice system and some minorities get the bottom hand just because you are not white. There are some unfair situations between black and white people and most readers will realize this and understand that we are equals.

I hope that when you receive this letter you have turned you life around for the better. I think that you would be better off just working for money and not pulling stick ups. You have real potential it sounds like you could even go pro but not if you keep doing stuff like this. I have a lot of hope for you

Your Friend,

Brenden
